Despair

“When the human being becomes desperate he/she relies on God only,” says scenario writer Haroutun Ghukassian

As a creative person have you become desperate during the last ten years? How have you overcome that feeling?

I am purposeful person. In 1992-1993, which was a very difficult period of time for Armenia, I wrote scenarios at home and that work was close to my heart. When I wrote scenarios I felt that I was ready for it. Later I decided to turn to various literary critics and their opinion was positive. When we review Armenian films there are successful ones among them which have national but unfortunately not global nature.

I don’t become desperate. Sometimes I am in low spirits, but having faith in God I pray every evening before sleeping; besides I think about positive things and try to overcome difficulties by means of remembering pleasant moments. In my opinion there is no stress, there is simply stress mentality. I think we should go to the church not only on the feast days. I am not fanatic, but I think the greatest of all religions is Christianity, the teaching and doctrine of which lead to the light. My faith comes from my friends. My roots are in Goris. My father’s grandmother, Sandoukht, every morning opened the window and prayed God. Family education is very important; the young generation is educated mainly in the family and not by means of TV programs and projects.

With whom do you share your thoughts? Whom do you trust?

I share my thoughts with my wife, parents, brother, but I rely on God. When the human being becomes desperate he/she relies on God only. I don’t admit human being’s becoming desperate and leaving work. It is necessary to manage to live and be in the proper situation. I don’t believe in chance, there is regularity, God’s providence in everything. I am courageous and at the same time I have common sense. My experience shows that I am right. Human being shouldn’t live with the sense of sin which is an obstacle in his/her way and I don’t admit it. Human being is always sinful. I admit that there is a supernatural power but I don’t try to understand it. It is an absolute power.

Do you control yourself in all situations of life: Do you set hopes on God?

I try to live consciously. When I write a scenario I try to leave it aside and to move forward. There is no field undesirable and incomprehensible for human being. I think people achieve success only thanks to diligence. I can’t tolerate people with average abilities who mainly are arrogant. My despairs are momentary. For a moment it seems to me that I can’t write any more, but later I understand that I can’t live without writing. I know that God is always with me and I render glory to God that in due time I have overcome many problems relying on God. I think all difficulties are overcome only by means of love towards the others and God.

In your scenarios what do you strive for?

Many people wish to share their thoughts with me. When moral and spiritual values are weakened human being naturally appears on the brink of despair.  I try to help those who need my help. I can’t imagine myself in the role of the nation’s savior. I create films which arouse positive feelings. There is no malice in my scenarios and films. Even negative heroes have some positive traits. Human being should always be optimistic. Such people are kind; they aren’t rejoiced seeing the others’ misfortunes. Presently young people dreams are limited only by having a luxurious car or something like that. The nation’s imagination is exhausted. There are things which are independent on our will. Whereas human being should be sincere with his/her own self, gain spiritual knowledge which is very important.
